Inside one of Australia’s best franchises: exploring the opportunities of DDK through the eyes of a franchisee

Inside one of Australia's best franchises: exploring the opportunities of DDK through the eyes of a franchisee

Dream Doors Kitchens has been delivering amazing kitchen facelifts for over 10 years. In that time, we have installed over 20,000 kitchens and grown to become Australia’s largest kitchen franchise. We have been rated Top 10 at the Top Franchise Awards for 4 years in a row.

A huge part of our success is due to our incredible franchises, and the support available to them as part of our network. We pride ourselves on delivering the highest quality onboarding training and long-term assistance, as well as extensive support across operations, training, marketing, supplier relationships, and more.

Our franchisees understand that we are part of a team, and that head office is in their corner ready to help them as they strive to unlock their full potential. We sat down for a chat with some of these franchisees and took some time to hear about their experiences as a member of the DDK network.

From initial interest to enduring success: Gareth and Dee’s DDK story

When considering franchising opportunities or looking for the best franchises to buy in Australia, it’s crucial to hear from those who’ve already taken the plunge. Today, we’re speaking with two franchisees who recently joined our network in 2023 – Gareth, the owner of DDK Adelaide South, and Dee, the owner of DDK Gold Coast and Redlands & Logan. Read all about their experiences and the opportunities of franchising with one of Australia’s best franchises.

The path to DDK

Can you tell us about your journey with DDK, from initial interest to today?

Gareth: “It was a seamless transition for me, as I had a trade background. I had a very positive start and if I needed any assistance in any way, I knew I could talk to head office and they would genuinely make an effort to help. They are always encouraging and supporting me if I need it.”

Dee: “Our initial journey began when I saw a Facebook ad of a kitchen design that I liked while we were renovating an investment property. We had never heard of DDK so we looked into it, discovered it was a franchise and were interested in finding out more.

“We initially met with the Executive Director Cam at the Brisbane East Showroom, he was warm, friendly and very passionate about the brand and the business – that got us very excited about becoming a franchisee. We officially joined the DDK team about 3 months later.”

What attracted you to this specific franchise business for sale, and why did you ultimately decide to join DDK?

Gareth: “The business model and the niche it focuses on through the kitchen facelifts was a huge draw. Plus, the fact I could start off running it as a capital-light business and grow over time with the support of a national franchise. I also liked that I didn’t have to go back on the tools full time if I didn’t want to.”

Dee: “The brand, the buying power of being a franchisee, the head office team, the potential profit margins, and the structure of customers’ payment processes.”

How long did the onboarding process take from initial enquiry to becoming a franchisee?

Gareth: “I bought an existing franchise so was a little different. I had 2 weeks on the road with the old owner, then had a few days in Melbourne with other franchises going through training that would help set me up for success in the long term.”

Dee: The process took us around 3 months but we had some delays with our lawyer that made things take a bit longer.

Growth and market demand

How has your business grown since joining the franchise?

Gareth: “I feel my growth is going in the right direction. I’m excited to see how my next couple of years go as I can feel us heading in the right direction.”

Dee: “We have learnt a lot really quickly. I knew nothing about kitchens besides cooking before joining DDK, and now I can tell you all about finishes, products etc. I learnt on the job, from fellow franchisees, and from head office.”

How would you describe the market demand for your services in your area?

Gareth: “Very strong. Our enquiries are increasing and we’ve gotten the most we’ve ever had in the last few months since I’ve taken over the business.”

Dee: “There seems to be good demand for services in our areas. We average about 20 leads per week.”

Support and training: the DDK advantage

What has been your experience with the support and training provided by the franchise

Gareth: “The Franchise Support Manager, Sam, is amazing. If I have any questions about the Business Operating System (BOS) he will assist immediately. Adin, the Business Development Manager is always checking in and answers all my questions whenever he’s asked. I dealt with the General Manager, Dave, the most initially and it was great to bounce ideas off him. I have felt nothing but support from head office and my experience has been extremely positive.”

What has been your favourite part of being in the DDK network?

Dee: We really enjoyed the conference and meeting all of the franchisees, and know we can call on anyone any time with questions and everyone is keen to help!

Advice for prospective franchisees

For those wondering how to join a franchise or exploring the best franchises Australia has to offer, Gareth and Dee have some valuable advice:

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a DDK franchise?

Gareth: “Put the work in. Understand the products we are selling. Knowledge is everything. You must be very confident when trying to sell a kitchen so make sure you know what you are talking about and if there are things you don’t know, then learn it. You will always have someone in the network ready and willing to help you grow and upskill.”

Dee: “Don’t be scared to ask questions.”
